其實祇要看看字面都大概可知紀實攝影就是用攝影術去紀錄真實，一種客觀的、不虛構、不誇張的攝影形式，多以抓拍方式再現真實情景，故攝影作品没有美不美，丑不醜。 紀實攝影就是人類活動的紀錄，包括人與大自然（信仰、宗教..）、人與人（社交、風俗習慣..）、人與社會（制度、政經..）等。
紀實攝影擁有一如文獻般的社會敍事功能；新聞攝影亦屬於紀實攝影類，分別在於新聞攝影的時間性是以突發事件為主，圖片以重點式單一張為最（即必须是紀錄該新聞事件最具代表性的一刻，故此好的新聞攝影師必须是經驗豐富、攝影技術高超、新聞觸角敏鋭和即時的應變能力強，媒體是新聞報紙及新聞雜誌）。
跟據前述，任何客觀地紀錄真實面貌、直率、不修飾的抓拍，只要能呈現真實的當下就是有價值的紀實攝影了；是這様的嗎?

紀實Documentary這個詞源于拉丁文的 " docere" 意思是 「教導 」，紀實照片的功能應不止于客觀地傳達信息，他還應該藉著影像的形式，去傳達出有意義的信息；透露出社會某些層面的真相，令觀者對該事情有深度的認知和牽動情緒的感受，從而達到教化觀眾的作用。所以紀實攝影必须關懷社會，見証社會並參予社會的改造（或改善）：紀實攝影師一定是位人道主義者、擁有一顆悲天憫人的心，對生命尊重、有獻身精神、及追求人性化的社會為依歸。
有意思的紀實攝影應擁有以下三點特質：
1.拍攝者有明確意圖（有明確的創作意念和目的）。
2.處理影像傳遞信息的能力夠好（畫面以形式和結構作橋樑，藉著理性的手法表達出感性的內涵，使觀賞者感受到）。
3.令觀賞者作出反思。（既是紀實攝影的目的，亦是有才攝影師的表演場）
